The members of L’Obac Ensemble are all musicians from OBC (Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya) and the Banda Municipal de Barcelona, both of which are resident at L’Auditori de Barcelona. L’Obac Ensemble was formed to explore chamber music, a genre largely ignored in current music programmes despite its enduring popularity with audiences.

Though the members of the ensemble are young musicians, they all have plenty of experience as soloists as well as in orchestras and in chamber music groups, here in Spain and internationally. They share a common concern to offer the public a complete musical experience in which they can showcase their individual talent and the synergy created by the group as a whole.

The basic formation of the chamber group is a string quartet with the addition of four wind instruments. That said, the ensemble is variable and flexible, always depending on the repertoire to be performed, ranging from a quartet to a nonet on some occasions. Its programmes are further enhanced with the collaboration of internationally renowned soloists who expand the repertoire through the addition of programmes with piano, harp, etc.

L’Obac is one of the few chambers ensembles combining string and wind instruments, with a focus grounded in works from classicism and romanticism. The group’s signature features are the contrasting colour between instrumental families, sonic intensity and symphonic dynamics, as well as soloist passages for each instrument.

In consequence, its programmes are highly varied, with styles ranging from the classical period to contemporary music, overviewing the standard chamber music repertoire while also adding less frequently heard scores which are the result of the ensemble’s exhaustive research and its desire to ensure audiences a unique musical experience.
